Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to develop a dual peg-in-hole insertion strategy. Dual peg-in-hole insertion is the most common task in manufacturing. Most of the previous work develop the insertion strategy in a two- or three-dimensional space, in which they suppose the initial yaw angle is zero and only concern the roll and pitch angles. However, in some case, the yaw angle could not be ignored due to the pose uncertainty of the peg on the gripper. Therefore, there is a need to design the insertion strategy in a higher-dimensional configuration space.

Design/methodology/approach

In this paper, the authors handle the insertion problem by converting it into several sub-problems based on the attractive region formed by the constraints. The existence of the attractive region in the high-dimensional configuration space is first discussed. Then, the construction of the high-dimensional attractive region with its sub-attractive region in the low-dimensional space is proposed. Therefore, the robotic insertion strategy can be designed in the subspace to eliminate some uncertainties between the dual pegs and dual holes.

Findings

Dual peg-in-hole insertion is realized without using of force sensors. The proposed strategy is also used to demonstrate the precision dual peg-in-hole insertion, where the clearance between the dual-peg and dual-hole is about 0.02 mm.

Practical implications

The sensor-less insertion strategy will not increase the cost of the assembly system and also can be used in the dual peg-in-hole insertion.

Originality/value

The theoretical and experimental analyses for dual peg-in-hole insertion are proposed without using of force sensor.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to give a novel sensor‐less manipulation strategy for the high‐precision assembly of an eccentric peg into a hole.

Design/methodology/approach

Based on the authors' previous work on the attractive region, this paper proposes the sensorless eccentric peg‐hole insertion strategy. The analysis is based on the visible strategic behaviors by decomposing the high‐dimensional configuration space of the eccentric peg‐hole into two low dimensional configuration subspaces. Then, the robotic manipulations can be designed in the configuration subspaces. Finally, a typical industry application, fitting an eccentric crankshaft into a bearing hole of the automotive air‐conditioners, is used to validate the presented strategy.

Findings

The attractive region constructed in the configuration space has been applied to guide the robotic manipulations, such as, the locating and the insertion.

Practical implications

The designed robotic assembly system without using force sensor or flexible wrist has an advantage in terms of expense and durability for the automotive air‐conditioners manufacturing industry.

Originality/value

Most previous work on sensorless manipulation strategy has concentrated on inserting a symmetric peg into a hole. However, for the assembly of an eccentric peg into a hole, the robotic manipulations should be explored in a high‐dimensional configuration space as the six‐DOFs of the eccentric peg. In this paper, the decomposition method of the high‐dimensional configuration space would make the system analysis visible; then, the assembly strategy can be easily designed in the two subspaces.

Abstract

Purpose

Picking up pistons in arbitrary poses is an important step on car engine assembly line. The authors usually use vision system to estimate the pose of the pistons and then guide a stable grasp. However, a piston in some poses, e.g. the mouth of the piston faces forward, is hardly to be directly grasped by the gripper. Thus, we need to reorient the piston to achieve a desired pose, i.e. let its mouth face upward, for grasping.

Design/methodology/approach

This paper aims to present a vision-based picking system that can grasp pistons in arbitrary poses. The whole picking process is divided into two stages. At localization stage, a hierarchical approach is proposed to estimate the piston’s pose from image which usually involves both heavy noise and edge distortions. At grasping stage, multi-step robotic manipulations are designed to enable the piston to follow a nominal trajectory to reach to the minimum of the distance between the piston’s center and the support plane. That is, under the design input, the piston would be pushed to achieve a desired orientation.

Findings

A target piston in arbitrary poses would be picked from the conveyor belt by the gripper with the proposed method.

Practical implications

The designed robotic bin-picking system using vision is an advantage in terms of flexibility in automobile manufacturing industry.

Originality/value

The authors develop a methodology that uses a pneumatic gripper and 2D vision information for picking up multiple pistons in arbitrary poses. The rough pose of the parts are detected based on a hierarchical approach for detection of multiple ellipses in the environment that usually involve edge distortions. The pose uncertainties of the piston are eliminated by multi-step robotic manipulations.

This paper aims to evaluate the inhibitive effect and adsorption behavior of the 2-amino-5-thiol-1,3,4-thiadiazole vanillin (A) on copper in 3 per cent NaCl solution.

Abstract

Purpose

This paper aims to evaluate the inhibitive effect and adsorption behavior of the 2-amino-5-thiol-1,3,4-thiadiazole vanillin (A) on copper in 3 per cent NaCl solution.

Design/methodology/approach

A thiazole Schiff bases were synthesized, named, 2-amino-5-thiol-1,3,4-thiadiazole vanillin (A), which was fabricated respectively on copper surface by the molecular self-assembled. Evaluation was carried out by electrochemical measurement and surface analysis techniques. Measurement of static friction coefficient scanning electron microscopy and Contact angle analysis were applied, and it is finally confirmed the existence of the adsorbed film. The inhibitive mechanism of A was evaluated by means of quantitative calculation and molecular dynamics simulation.

Findings

The electrochemical measurement indicated that the self-assembled molecular film can effectively inhibit the corrosion of copper sheet, when the concentration was 15 mmol⋅L−1 and the assembly time was 6 h, the corrosion inhibition effect was the best, reaching as high as 97.5 per cent. Scanning electron microscopy results showed that the Schiff base compound forms a protective film on the surface of the copper, which effectively blocks the transfer of corrosion particles to the metal substrate, thereby inhibiting the occurrence of corrosion. Adsorption behavior of A followed the Langmuir’s adsorption isotherm and attributed to mixed-type adsorption. The results of Quantitative calculation and molecular dynamics simulation showed that A was adsorbed on Cu (111) surface in parallel.

Research limitations/implications

In this study, the corrosion inhibition properties of Schiff base film were investigated by combining theory with experiment. Theoretical calculation is helpful to guide the synthesis of efficient and environmentally friendly corrosion inhibitors.

Practical implications

The damage caused by metal corrosion is great. The self-assembled Schiff base membrane synthesized in this paper is simple and compact, and the corrosion inhibition efficiency of copper in 3 per cent NaCl solution is 97.5 per cent.

Social implications

Inhibition of metal corrosion can better save energy and reduce economic losses.

Originality/value

The synthesized Schiff base was prepared on the copper surface by the molecular self-assembled. The Schiff base membrane has a good corrosion inhibition effect on copper in 3 per cent NaCl solution, and the corrosion inhibition efficiency is up to 97.5 per cent.

Abstract

Purpose

This paper aims to evaluate the inhibitive effect and adsorption behavior of 5-(ethylthio)-1H-tetrazole (EHT) and 5-(benzylthio)-1H-tetrazole (BHT) on copper in a sulfur-ethanol system.

Design Methodology Approach

Evaluation was carried out using electrochemical measurement and surface analysis techniques. Measurements of static friction coefficient by scanning electron microscopy and contact angle analysis were applied and finally confirmed the existence of the adsorbed film. The inhibitive mechanism of the two compounds was evaluated by means of quantitative calculation and molecular dynamics simulation. The friction coefficient of corrosion surface before and after adding corrosion inhibitor was determined through static friction coefficient measurements.

Findings

The electrochemical measurement indicated that the most effective concentration of two corrosion inhibitors was 70 mg L–1, while the inhibition efficiency of that was EHT > BHT. The friction coefficient data showed that the addition of corrosion inhibitor reduced the roughness of the corrosion surface. Adsorption behavior of two inhibitors followed the Langmuir’s adsorption isotherm and was attributed to mixed-type adsorption. The results of quantitative calculation and molecular dynamics simulation showed that tetrazole rings of the two inhibitors and its connected S atoms were adsorbed on Cu(111) surface in parallel.

Originality Value

The corrosion inhibition performance of two tetrazolium derivatives in a sulfur-ethanol system was studied by combining experiments with theory, which provided a theoretical basis for the future research.

Abstract

Purpose

This paper aims to: provide theoretical analysis and empirical study on the relationship between organizational socialization and organizational citizenship behavior (OCB); analyze the mediating role of organizational identification in their relationship; and draw from both of these to suggest practical implications to organizations aiming to effectively socialize employees, and for employees themselves.

Design/methodology/approach

First, the paper reviews the literature regarding organizational socialization, OCB and organizational identification. Second, it develops a theoretical model linking organizational socialization, organizational identification and OCB, and then proposes a series of research hypotheses. Third, drawing on samples of seven high‐tech manufacturing enterprises in China, it tests hypotheses based on a series of measurement and statistical analysis.

Findings

Organizational history, language, values and goals socialization are positively related to OCB and organizational identification. Further, organizational identification fully mediates the relationship between language, values and goals socialization and OCB, and partially mediates the relationship between history socialization and OCB.

Research limitations/implications

The cross‐sectional design prevented the making of causal statements. Data are from employees' self‐report, giving rise to concern about possible common source bias.

Originality/value

The paper explores the relationships between organizational socialization and OCB, and proposes and tests the mediating role of organizational identification.

Abstract

Purpose

This paper aims to present an adaptive sliding mode control (ASMC) for tunnel boring machine cutterhead telescopic system with uncertainties to achieve a high-precision trajectory in complex strata. This method could be applied to solve the problems caused by linear and nonlinear model uncertainties.

Design/methodology/approach

First, an integral-type sliding surface is defined to reduce the static tracking error. Second, a projection type adaptation law is designed to approximate the linear and nonlinear redefined parameters of the electrohydraulic system. Third, a nonlinear robust term with a continuous approximation function is presented for handling load force uncertainty and reducing sliding mode chattering. Moreover, Lyapunov theory is applied to guarantee the stability of the closed-loop system. Finally, the effectiveness of the proposed controller is proved by comparative experiments on a scaled test rig.

Findings

The linear and nonlinear model uncertainties lead to large variations in the dynamics of the mechanism and the tracking error. To achieve precise position tracking, an adaptation law was integrated into the sliding mode control which compensated for model uncertainties. Besides, the inherent sliding mode chattering was reduced by a continuous approximation function, while load force uncertainty was solved by a nonlinear robust feedback. Therefore, a novel ASMC for tunnel boring machine cutterhead telescopic system with uncertainties can improve its tracking precision and reduce the sliding mode chattering.

Originality/value

To the best of the authors’ knowledge, the ASMC is proposed for the first time to control the tunnel boring machine cutterhead telescopic system with uncertainties. The presented control is effective not only in control accuracy but also in parameter uncertainty.

Abstract

Purpose

This research is motivated by the increasing need for international interactions during the gradual recovery of the tourism industry. By recognizing the paucity of research on cultural closeness and accommodation categories, this research aims to illuminate the influencing mechanisms of psychological closeness and travelers’ willingness to book an accommodation-sharing property while booking an accommodation.

Design/methodology/approach

The authors employ a mixed-methods approach, including an experiment and semistructured interviews.

Findings

Results show that hosts’ higher cultural identity congruence leads to travelers’ higher willingness to book an accommodation-sharing property. Psychological closeness mediates the positive effect of cultural identity congruence on travelers’ willingness to book. The authors further explore the moderating role of room types (entire room vs. private room) and find that the mediation effect is stronger for booking an entire room.

Originality/value

The current research underlines the importance of cultural identity congruence and accommodation type on travelers’ willingness to book an accommodation-sharing property and psychological closeness.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this article is to explore the relationship between the attributes of Olympic mascots and their impact on sponsorship effectiveness. Based on a multiattribute model and the introduction of engagement theory and the meaning transfer model, this article uses the 2022 Beijing Winter Olympics mascot “Bing Dwen Dwen” as the research object to empirically analyze the effects and mechanisms of the mascot's attributes on preference, event engagement, sponsorship enterprise trust and sponsorship enterprise attitude, ultimately constructing a sponsorship effectiveness model.

Design/methodology/approach

The survey method was used to examine 238 respondents' emotions and attitudes towards companies participating in sponsoring Olympic mascots.

Findings

The study found that the main attributes of the mascot include visual and emotional factors, both of which have a positive impact on preference, with emotional factors having a greater influence than visual factors. Visual and emotional factors indirectly affect engagement through preference. Preference and engagement play a completely mediating role in the effect of mascot attributes on sponsorship enterprise trust and sponsorship enterprise attitude.

Practical implications

This study provides practical recommendations for managers to achieve marketing success in sports sponsorship through mascots.

Originality/value

This paper provides a measurement tool for the study of mascot attributes and important support for subsequent research in sponsorship marketing.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to provide scientific guidance for the integration of industrialization and information (TIOII). In recent years, TIOII has promoted the development of intelligent manufacturing in China. However, many enterprises blindly invest in TIOII, which affects their normal production and operation.

Design/methodology/approach

This study establishes an efficiency evaluation model for TIOII. In this paper, entropy analytic hierarchy process (AHP) constraint cone and cross-efficiency are added based on traditional data envelopment analysis (DEA) model, and entropy AHP–cross-efficiency DEA model is proposed. Then, statistical analysis is carried out on the integration efficiency of enterprises in Guangzhou using cross-sectional data, and the traditional DEA model and entropy AHP–cross-efficiency DEA model are used to analyze the integration efficiency of enterprises.

Findings

The data show that the efficiency of enterprise integration is at a medium level in Guangzhou. The efficiency of enterprise integration has no significant relationship with enterprise size and production type but has a low negative correlation with the development level of enterprise integration. In addition, the improved DEA model can better reflect the real integration efficiency of enterprises and obtain complete ranking results.

Originality/value

By adding the entropy AHP constraint cone and cross-efficiency, the traditional DEA model is improved. The improved DEA model can better reflect the real efficiency of TIOII and obtain complete ranking results.
